Canvas: What are the differences between the course roles?
Updated: 26 August 2020 01:06 PM

Everyone who is a member of a course in Canvas is added with one of the following roles:

  • Teacher: Teachers have full access to the course content and tools. Teachers can do pretty much anything in a course.
  • TA: TA’s have the same access as teachers, with a few exceptions: TA’s cannot add other users to the course, publish the course, or set up learning outcomes.
  • Designer: A course designer can set up and manage course content, but shouldn’t be involved in actually teaching the course.  They don’t have access to grades, and can’t send messages to students.
  • Student: Students can view unlocked content in a course and participate in course activities.
  • Observer: An observer can see the course content, but cannot modify it. Observers are like students, but they don’t show up in the gradebook. In some cases, note-takers are added to courses as observers by the Centre for Students with Disabilities.
