Canvas: How do I prevent assignment grades from being published to students? (Muting assignments)
Updated: 15 May 2017 01:58 PM

When you assign a grade, Canvas may (depending on the student’s notification settings) automatically send out a notification to that student, informing them that the grade has been assigned. The grade and any submission comments also become visible to the student through the course gradebook. In some cases, you may want to wait until you’ve graded all of the submissions before releasing the grades or comments.

You can prevent the release of grades by muting the assignment. While an assignment is muted, no grades will be visible to students, and no grading notification will be sent out. Also, any comments that you make on submission for muted assignments will not be published until the assignment is unmuted.

When you're done grading, you can unmute the assignment to publish the grades and send out grading notifications.

For details on how to mute assignments, see the Canvas Guides.
