Basic Mac Troubleshooting Steps

A number of issues you may be experiencing with your Mac can be resolved by performing an SMC and PRAM reset. These two resets will not erase any of your data - they simply reset how the components in your computer talk to each other. 

Performing an SMC or PRAM reset can resolve these issues:

  • Computer won't charge
  • Computer won't turn on
  • Display not turning on
  • Computer running slow
  • Fan running abnormally
  • Grey screen on startup
  • Question mark on startup
  • Wi-Fi/Bluetooth slow or not working
  • Ports not working (e.g. USB)
  • and many more things... It's always a good first troubleshooting step. 

Another good troubleshooting step is to run the First Aid function in Disk Utility

  • Checks your hard drive's health
  • Repairs any file system errors
  • Can speed up your machine

If you think you may have Malware or a Virus, we recommend the free version of Malwarebytes for Mac.

  • The free version detects and removes Malware for free, and does not expire. You have to manually start a scan. 
  • The difference between the Free and Premium version is that the Premium version automatically runs scans for you periodically and acts as a proactive Anti-Virus. 

As a last resort effort before looking into hardware repair options, your best bet is to Backup your Mac (if possible) and Reinstall MacOS
